Dear Family, Friends, Ministry Partners,
Tuesday-Saturday, April 7-10, for the second time as a missionary (4-years and 21-missions) I had a flight that did not go. I arrived in Bujumbura after midnight 36-hours late. After a couple hours sleep, I spoke at a translator conference. I wore out one translator, he just quit, and he just stood there, out of words. Another translator jumped up and took his place. We had over 30 in attendance. The translator conference was to motivate the translators to use the Bible, how to share Jesus and we showed “God Provides” video series from Crown Financial.
To show the videos we had to borrow a TV and then borrow a DVD player from someone else. WOW! The response to the “God Provides” videos was overwhelming. The videos revolutionized the Burundi perception of the Bible stories. The video representation of the Bible story made the story real and alive for the Burundi.
Sunday, April 11, I visited a church that e3 Partners has never worked with. One of our translators decided to open a Nazarene Church based on the e3 Partners model he had learned as a translator. This church officially opened in November 2009 and has 20-members with 7-baptisms and is growing. A church member testified how she could go to church in her community instead of walking somewhere else. A neighbor testified how his wife refused to go to church, but she’s now a Christian. Muslims and Jehovah Witnesses who have converted and are being persecuted by their families seek refuge in this church. We delivered a donated key board from USA. The church plans to use the key board not only for Sunday worship, but evangelism outreach at the beach. The church members took turns to “practice”.
Monday, April 12, the church in Burundi is making progress against evil. The spiritual battle in Burundi is intense. I cannot tell you how many times I have wanted to “throw in towel”, the sleepless nights, paranormal activity and the heavy oppression in the air. This is the first trip to Burundi without the heavy oppression. Yet the spiritual attacks continue and we had to discipline a Burundi co-worker who fell into sin.
Tuesday, April 13, we followed up with churches planted in the last 2-years. The churches are growing! We will start putting up stats of the progress of the new churches to help with prayer from us and accountability from them. Two churches planted last summer have over 250-members and are continuing to grow.
Wednesday-Friday, April 14-16, we moved up country to Karusi. We left the comforts of Bujumbura and moved into an underdeveloped region. Hotel had no running water, roads had no pavement, power came from generators, and internet does not exist. The jeep’s wheel sheared the lug nuts off 3 times. Auzelio and I got to walk around town at night in Africa, total darkness. Because of security, I carried my computer. Soldiers stopped me and wanted my bag. They were disappointed only electronics. They had no use for this and let me wander at will. We got to drive at night in Africa. When soldiers saw us “white” people they yelled, “You’re not to be out at night, too many bandits!” We explained the break downs and the need to keep a schedule. The general finally came out of the bar and moved the barbed wire. There were no bandits, but a lonely, dark unmarked mountain road and terrible thunder storm.
In Karusi, we taught 13 pastors from 13 different denominations how to share Jesus. Then we took the evange-cube into the town and shared Jesus for 90-minutes. We talked to 387-people plus many, many children and 135 adults prayed for Jesus. Pastors confessed that they had never gone to people’s homes to share Jesus. They would wait for people to come to church never going out into the community. Now the pastors want to go out into the community.
Saturday, April 17, we continued planning for upcoming church planting campaigns, some have Americans, but most are Burundi only campaigns. I am putting photos on the internet, for now on Facebook and soon on our blog http://rockthedesert.typepad.com/. The news from the airport is that no one is leaving Africa to Europe. This could be my third major flight delay.
Much love and God’s peace,
